RIDOT has had a long partnership with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) for commuter rail service connecting Providence to Boston. Since 2010, RIDOT has worked with the MBTA to expand service to two more stations, including a direct air-to-rail connection via the InterLink at T.F. Green State Airport.
Today, the MBTA makes nearly 80 stops per week in Rhode Island. The expanded service and additional stations provide Rhode Islanders with in-state commuter rail, allowing them to choose to ride the train as opposed to driving on busy Route 4 or I-95.
Providence Station
RIDOT launched service with just five round trips per day to Providence in 1988. Service expanded over time with more trips, including the development of a robust weekend schedule. The MBTA now provides 37 weekday and 19 weekend stops in Providence.
T.F. Green Station
In 2010, RIDOT and the MBTA worked together to extend that service south to the InterLink at T.F. Green State Airport in Warwick. On November 14, 2011, service to T.F. Green expanded to include 20 weekday stops. The expanded schedule provides service to and from the Airport that better matches up with flight departure and arrival times.
Wickford Junction Station
RIDOT began commuter rail service from South County when it opened the Wickford Junction Commuter Rail Station in North Kingstown on April 23, 2012. Like at T.F. Green Station, commuters will find 20 weekday stops with service to and from Warwick and Providence, with 15 stops offering connecting service back and forth to Boston.
