Washington Bridge Bikeway Under Construction

RIDOT is working to turn the old Washington Bridge into a premiere bikeway and linear park. In order to accomplish this, the section of the East Bay Bike Path on this bridge has been closed and will remain closed for about two years. Click here for more information.

Other Bike Path Closures

Construction has closed a section of the Fred Lippitt Woonasquatucket River Bikeway. Long-term closures of sections of the Coventry Greenway, and periodic weekday closures of the Blackstone River Bikeway are scheduled in 2012.

East Bay Bike Path pioneer passes

George Redman event

George Redman, a tireless advocate for getting the East Bay Bike Path built, passed away on August 16, 2012. A celebration of his work not only for the East Bay Bike Path but for bike path development statewide took place on November 29, 2011 at the State House. Governor Lincoln D. Chafee, RIDOT Director Michael Lewis, RIDEM Director Janet Coit and more than 150 others joined with Mr. Redman at the event.When ongoing construction on the Washington Bridge Linear Park is complete, it will be renamed the George Redman Linear Park.

Ride the Woonasquatucket

The annual Woony River Ride is scheduled for September 22, 2012. Hosted by the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council, the event features a 5, 10, 23 or 50-mile ride along the Woonasquatucket River. Register here.

The Coalition for Transportation Choices is encouraging Rhode Island school children to walk and bike to school whenever possible. The annual International Walk to School Day takes place each fall, this year on October 3. Historical Reenactments near Coventry Greenway

The General Nathanael Greene Homestead on Taft Street in Coventry occasionally schedules historical reenactments with simulated musket and cannon fire. The Homestead is located close to the bikeway where it crosses Laurel Avenue in the Anthony section of Coventry.Visit the Homestead's website to learn more.

Bike & Ride

Bring your bike on public transit to make it easier to ride to work, school or just to extend your ride and visit new places. Bike racks are on all RIPTA buses and bikes are allowed on MBTA commuter rail trains during off-peak hours.

In memory of Frank J. Cabral, who died after being hit by a car while bicycling on Route 1 in Charlestown, this law requires motorists to drive a safe distance from bicyclists. View the law here.

From I-95 North and South:
Take Route 195 East to Exit 4 for Riverside-Veterans Memorial Parkway. Continue on Veterans Memorial Pkwy.

From 195 West:
Take Exit 6 South Broadway. Take a left turn at the bottom of the exit onto South Broadway, then continue straight on South Broadway for approximately 2 miles to Veterans Memorial Pkwy. Turn right onto the Parkway, bike path parking will be approximately 1/2 mile on your left across from the golf course.

Parking is available:

  • Veterans Memorial Parkway, East Providence (2 parking lots). Veterans Parkway about 1/4 mile south of South Broadway.
  • Riverside Square, East Providence, Bullocks Point Ave. next to Dari-Bee.
  • Haines Memorial State Park, Barrington, Metropolitan Park Dr., one mile from Crescent View Ave.
  • Independence Park, Bristol, Thames St., just after its intersection with Hope St.

  • Audubon Society of RI logoThe Audubon Society of Rhode Island's Environmental Education Center and its scenic boardwalk are located on the East Bay Bike Path in Bristol. Bike racks are available.

    Ten Mile River Greenway

    RIDOT's newest bike path, the Ten Mile River Greenway, extends from Kimberly Ann Rock Athletic Fields in East Providence to Slater Memorial Park in Pawtucket.

    Blackstone Valley Chamber of Commerce Blackstone River Bikeway website

    The Blackstone River Bikeway follows the path of the Blackstone River, and extends from Woonsocket to Pawtucket. Eventually it will connect with the Blackstone River Bikeway in Massachusetts, reaching to Worcester.

    Parking is available:

  • John Street (Route 123) Parking Area (Former Lonsdale Drive-in), Lincoln.
  • Blackstone River State Park, Front Street, Lincoln.
  • Kelley House, Lower River Road, Lincoln.
  • Route 116 parking area (George Washington Highway) Lincoln.
  • Weber Street, Cumberland. Mendon Road (Route 122) to Store Hill Road to right onto Front Street, which becomes Weber Street.
  • Blackstone River Visitors Center, I-295 North, Lincoln.
  • School Street, Albion, Lincoln. Mendon Road (Route 122) to Albion Road. Follow over the river.
  • River Road, Manville, Lincoln. Route 99 to Sayles Hill Road (Route 120) east to Main Street; right onto New River Road, cross bike bath to parking.
  • Davison Road at River's Edge Recreational Complex, Woonsocket. Manville Road (Route 126) to Davison Road.
  • Quonset Bike Path

    RIDOT and the Quonset Development Corporation opened the Quonset Bike Path in 2009. The 2.5-mile bike path hugs the northern perimeter of the Quonset Business Park in North Kingstown and affords access to Allens Harbor and the Calf Pasture Point area.

    Parking for the Quonset Bike Path is available:

  • In the Quonset Gateway plaza, close to Dave's Marketplace, off Gate Road and Route 1 (Post Road).
  • Marine Road, off Davisville Road in the Quonset Business Park.
