The Iway: Relocating I-195 in Providence

Iway project looking north - Fall 2011
Traffic flows freely over the new Providence River Bridge, the signature feature of the Iway project.

The I-195 Relocation Project, known as the Iway, is the largest project RIDOT has built since the construction of the Interstate system. It is a transformative project - quite literally changing the landscape in Providence - addressing a wide range of issues including safety, replacing aging infrastructure, lessening traffic congestion and bolstering economic development.

The Iway is nearing completion. All new highway construction and old highway demolition is complete. One of the final projects will be the rebuilding of city streets near the old highway corridor and development of parks along the Providence River. RIDOT also will be involved in the development of park areas and new pedestrian bridge on the granite footings of the old Providence River Bridge.

Iway Project Milestones

Since the Iway was largely built on a new alignment, traffic was largely unaffected during construction. The transition of moving traffic from the old highway to the new one was done in phases from Fall 2007 through Fall 2009. Numerous smaller changes affecting on and off ramps occured in 2010.

Major traffic pattern changes

  • I-95 North to I-195 East: November 2007
  • I-95 South to I-195 East: December 2008
  • I-195 West to I-95 South: June 2009
  • I-195 West to I-95 North: October 2009

RIDOT podcasts tell the Iway story

To really get an understanding of what the Iway proejct is, RIDOT has created a series of 12 podcasts, six in English and six in Spanish, using video footage shot during construction.

Let your child explore the Iway

I-195 Relocation LogoRIDOT helped create an exhibit at the Providence Children's Museum about solving problems, engineering and construction, and the new Iway. The kids can crank a crane and lift I-beams to construct a highway bridge, tackle bridge building challenges, redesign the city and find out about the Iway. The Museum’s Iway exhibit takes advantage of the I-195 relocation project, one of the biggest highway projects in the state’s history, to engage kids (and grown-ups) in an investigation of roadways and bridges.

    The color of the Iway

Iway paint colorThe color of the Iway was chosen to blend in with the marine landscape at the top of Narragansett Bay and the Providence River. This blue-green color can be found on the new Providence River Bridge and the many supporting beams and girders of the new highway. The steel components have undergone metalizing, a process with creates a durable finish before painting to resist cracking and chipping and greatly reduce maintenance costs.

Timothy Hiebert of Providence shot this stunning photo of the Providence skyline featuring the new Providence River Bridge. The photograph was published in the February issue of Rhode Island Monthly magazine and was selected as the monthly winner of its "I Luv RI" contest, an effort co-sponsored by The Washington Trust Company.
