The objective of RIDOT's Materials and Research Section is to assure quality materials are designed properly and that the materials provided meet specifications upon incorporation into all highway and bridge construction and maintenance projects, to administer the Rhode Island Department of Transportation’s Research and Pavement Preservation efforts and perform forensic testing when needed, to provide information on current and emerging technologies related to the transportation field in the areas of research and testing, products and processes, pavement preservation and geotechnical engineering and to advance the state of knowledge in these areas within the guidelines set forth by the department and the Federal Highway Administration.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA) recently launched the U.S. DOT Research Hub website, a searchable database of the latest agency-sponsored research, development, and technology projects. The database acts as a central location for information on projects funded by 10 U.S. DOT operating administrations, providing access to the Department's research portfolio at the project level. The database also provides links to research reports and other products generated by completed projects. The website has been released as a beta version in order to solicit feedback from the transportation community that will be used to help develop future database versions.
RIDOT hosted the annual meetings of two professional groups dedicated to the quality and innovative use of materials used in transportation infrastructure improvements on October 5 & 6, 2011.
