Materials

The objective of RIDOT's Materials effort is to assure quality materials are designed properly and that the materials provided meet specifications upon incorporation into all highway and bridge construction and maintenance projects.

The Materials staff is responsible for all quality assurance sampling and testing conducted for the Department's construction and maintenance programs. This work includes: specification review; distribution and recording of results; acceptance sampling and testing; process control sampling and testing; independent assurance sampling and testing; review certificates of compliance; writing of materials specifications; and implementation of the use of materials in construction and maintenance.

In addition to or as part of the above, the following is also performed:

  • Design and evaluation of portland cement and bituminous concrete mix designs
  • Investigation of construction/field/design problems/failures/conflict resolution
  • Preliminary Engineering and Final Construction Coring
  • Coordination of the FHWA Inspection Program
  • Specifications and Procedures Committee and Specification Committee
  • Design Project Specification Review and Geotechnical/subsurface investigations.
  • Forensic evaluations concerning various failure modes involving bridge decks, abutments, highway pavements, concrete delaminations, etc.
  • Evaluation of all construction materials by Central Laboratory to determine acceptability of individual items for various applications
  • Soil/Aggregate Review
  • Preliminary engineering and acceptance measurements of pavement markings reflectivity
  • Evaluation/Approval of all Aggregate Sources used in State Projects
  • Pavement Management Systems/Pavement Preservation Committee
