Street Lighting Curfew

Rte 6 street lighting RIDOT is examining State roads and highways where it may be possible to save energy costs by reducing overhead street lighting. This is being accomplished by establishing a lighting curfew during the early morning hours when traffic is lightest.

The Department carefully studies each road or intersection for inclusion in the program. RIDOT is updating signage, striping and adding additional reflective elements on these roads and others to improve nighttime visibility of roadway features.

RIDOT has installed lighting system timers on selected highways. These devices turn the lights off from midnight to 5 a.m. on Sunday though Thursday nights and from 2 a.m. to 5 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.

All locations that are part of the curfew are continually reviewed for any adjustments in timing that might be needed. Additionally, RIDOT has the ability to disable the timers used to operate the curfew programs in times of expected severe weather such as blizzards or tropical storms.

With the inclusion of additional locations in June 2011, RIDOT surpassed the $500,000 mark in terms of savings in electricty. The savings allow RIDOT to preserve the limited funding that is available to maintain the State’s transportation infrastructure.
