RIDOT delivering more projects on time with fewer added costs

RIDOT is working aggressively to deliver projects on time and to keep any cost overruns to a minimum. Over the past five years, the Department has made great strides in both of these areas. RIDOT works diligently with its contractors to bring projects to a resolution while greatly limiting the State's obligation for any added cost. Click here to learn more.

RIDOT, the Rhode Island Airport Corporation and the Federal Highway Administration have installed a unique transportation asset in the InterLink at T.F. Green Airport. The Rhode Island Transportation Information Center includes a large video wall displaying real-time travel information between the Airport and Providence.

A quick glance at the Center will help travelers make decisions on which form of transportation they will use when leaving the airport.

Enhanced commuter rail service at the InterLink

Passengers board an MBTA commuter train on the first day of expanded service at T.F. Green Station on November 14, 2011.

Commuter rail service to the InterLink at T.F. Green State Airport has nearly doubled to include 20 stops Monday through Friday. This new schedule took effect on Monday, November 14, 2011.

For the first time, trains arrive and depart T.F. Green Station outside typical morning and afternoon commuting hours with late morning and mid-day runs. This new schedule will better match up with common departure and arrival times at the Airport, offering travelers more options when considering public transportation to the Airport.

Tolling: Change needed for R.I.'s future

I-95 over Rte. 2

Insufficient funding for transportation leads to sights like this - bridge components so deteriorated that, while safe for travel, must be supported with steel shoring to adequately carry the bridge's traffic loads. Revenues from a proposed tolling facility in southern Rhode Island would be used to rehabilitate bridges along all of I-95 and I-295.

Rhode Island, like the rest of the country, is struggling to maintain its system of roads and bridges under very challenging financial constraints. Generally, the level of investment in infrastructure improvement has not kept pace with demand or the escalating costs of construction.

The current recession has only deepened these problems, making the need to establish an equitable, sustainable, long-term plan for funding transportation more important than ever. RIDOT is exploring tolling along I-95 in southern Rhode Island and at the Sakonnet River Bridge as a means to reverse downward trends of poor bridge and road conditions and give Rhode Islanders a first-class, 21st Century transportation system.

Sakonnet River Bridge Construction - November 2011

On November 18, the last steel tub girder was placed for the new Sakonnet River Bridge, connecting the new span to Portsmouth and Tiverton. Click here to begin a slide show of recent construction activity.

Construction is well underway on a $163.7 million project to replace the aging Sakonnet River Bridge, which carries Route 24 between Tiverton and Portsmouth. The bridge currently has a posted weight limit of 18 tons, requiring trucks, buses and other large vehicles to use lengthy detours in the area.

In April 2009, RIDOT broke ground on a the new bridge project, which is set for completion in 2013. The bridge is expected to be open to traffic earlier, in mid-2012. Explore the links below for more information on the project.

Rebuilding the Pawtucket River Bridge

Pawtucket River Bridge Construction - November 2011

The first set of steel arches for the new Pawtucket River Bridge take shape in mid November 2011. Click here to learn more.

RIDOT is currently replacing the Pawtucket River Bridge, which carries I-95 over the Seekonk River in Pawtucket. Located between Exits 27 and 28, the bridge currently is posted at 18 tons, forcing trucks to use long detours via I-295 or Route 146 or local detours on city streets.

Replacement of this bridge is a high priority for the Department. As construction moves forward, the bridge will open in phases and the weight limit will be lifted. A total of 10 bridges will be rehabilitated as part of this $81 million project.
