Union Avenue Bridge Closure in Providence

Complete Rehabilitation Underway

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation closed the Union Avenue Bridge over Route 10 in Providence on June 23, 2010. The bridge will be under construction for approximately a year and a half, reopening in Summer 2011 with final completion expected in Fall 2011. The former bridge was structurally deficient and had to be completely replaced. Only by completely closing this bridge can RIDOT replace it safely and quickly.

What does this mean?

The Union Avenue Bridge is one of a few bridges crossing Route 10 in Providence and the most direct route to and from the West End and Silver Lake neighborhoods. Traffic volumes on Union Avenue are significant, and congestion along the detour routes can be expected - especially during the morning and afternoon rush hours. During busy periods, motorists may wish to seek alternate routes to avoid this area.

RIDOT has posted signs for detour routes depending on your destination. Information on these are listed below. No detours are required for travel from Route 10 southbound to Union Avenue westbound or from Route 10 northbound to Union Avenue eastbound.

Due to high pedestrian traffic on this bridge, RIDOT is providing free bus service on Bus # 18 Union Avenue throughout the duration of this project. Visit RIPTA's website to learn more. You can also download RIPTA's revised schedule and map information for inbound and outbound service on Bus # 18.
