SAKONNET BRIDGE DETOUR FOR VEHICLES OVER 18 TONS

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) has posted the maximum vehicle weight for the Sakonnet River Bridge at 18 tons. Also restricted is any single vehicle equipped with more than two axles or any combination vehicle equipped with more than two axles per unit, except emergency vehicles, state vehicles, municipal vehicles, truck tractors and RIPTA vehicles. Restricted vehicles will need to use alternate routes.

The bridge carries Route 24 over the Sakonnet River and connects Tiverton and Portsmouth. The posting does not affect automobiles, SUVs, ambulances, and light trucks.

Tiverton is on the Rhode Island mainland, and is about five miles south of Fall River, Massachusetts. The Town of Portsmouth, along with the city of Newport and the Town of Middletown, are on Aquidneck Island.

What does this mean?

Vehicles restricted from the bridge must use another bridge for travel to and from Aquidneck Island.
